Overcoming Disappointment
Share
Hey Beauty Boss,
Let me be completely honest with you this morning. I have been feeling extremely disappointed with how December played out.
I'm doing all the things I can control, but it's not working out how I expected, so I find myself disappointed.
It's been hard. I continue to show up and execute my plans, but I'm not seeing the results I hoped for.
Does this sound like you?
One of the hardest parts is to continue to show up, even when it's not "working" out as you expected.
I have to ask myself, "Is this really not working, or am I being impatient?" Most of the time, it's impatience because we live in such a convenient society that when we do have to wait, it's uncomfortable. We rush to escape the uncomfortable situation instead of pushing through.
Then I ask myself, "Is what I'm expecting in my control or out of my control?" Most of the time, I'm disappointed because I did the things I set out to do, but very little happened, or nothing happened at all. At this point, I either revisit my strategy or go back to the first question - Did I give myself enough time to see results?
If I have given it enough time and executed my part, and I still see no results, then I have to ask myself, "Is there a better strategy?" Let's take posting, for example. If you post 3 times a day for 1 week and never make a sale, does that mean that posting online does not work? The answer is no. It could be that you need to post 3x a day for 3 weeks. It could mean you need to post & use email marketing. It could mean you need to continue posting, but revisit your content strategy.
As business owners, we have to be problem solvers. It's easy to fall into disappointment, complain, feel stuck, and avoid trying something new because you may become disappointed all over again. But we should not operate in fear. As Christian business owners were not given a spirit of fear. Disappointment is a part of life. I wish I could tell you that you'll avoid disappointment if you do these "10 business tips," but it's not reality. The reality is we will all experience disappointment, but it's learning how to handle it.
Lately, I've been asking God to show me why I get so disappointed. I have been finding things to rejoice in, instead of complaining about. I have continued to show up and do the things that I can control, and allow God to move in the things I cannot. Lastly, I've been acknowledging my disappointment. I've been praying, "Lord, I'm really disappointed by this. Help me to overcome this. Show me what I'm missing here." Being truthful about how we feel and asking God to help us is how we can begin to overcome disappointment.
I hope this email encouraged you if you've been feeling disappointed.
Hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas!
