Are You Working in Vain?
Share
Hey Beauty Boss,
This week, we are pausing on our website optimization series so that I can share something that’s been on my heart.
A friend shared this scripture with me, and I want to share it with you. Psalm 127: 1-2 says, “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—for he grants sleep to those he loves.”
This should be applied to every category of our lives, including our business. The essential message of this psalm is that without the Lord’s blessing, the work we do is worthless. If we are running endlessly after our goals, but the Lord is not in the center of it, then it’s all in vain.
This scripture isn’t an excuse to be lazy and not work. If you want to build a house or run a business, you will need to work. It’s not a free pass to do the bare minimum. God is not pouring out a blessing while you sit back and coast, and call that “waiting on God.” The scripture is pointing out that if our efforts are without the Lord, it’s all in vain.
A farmer doesn’t pray that the Lord multiply his crops if he doesn’t plant any seeds. That would be foolish. A farmer prepares the soil, plants the seeds, cares for the land, and God gives the growth. It’s a combination of being diligent in our work and putting our faith in God. When we live by faith, we don’t have to neglect rest or be anxious to get ahead in business. We do our work to the glory of God and trust that he will bless our work.
I learned this the hard way in entrepreneurship. It does no good to hustle and have a thriving business, but lose sight of God.
