Many people use these words interchangeably but they aren't the same.
What exactly is a body oil?
Body oils are made from natural ingredients such as carrier oils, essential oils and plant-based extracts. These ingredients are blended together to create a moisturizing skin treatment that is designed to be used on the body. Body oils usually aren't meant to be worn as a perfume or cologne.
Perfume oil is very similar in many ways—it's also made with essential oils, plant extracts or fragrance oils—but it has more concentrated levels of these ingredients than body oil does! That makes it smell stronger and last longer.

Shop Body Oil SampleBody oils are thicker & contain more moisturizing ingredients.
Body oils are a little heavier, and contain more moisturizing ingredients than perfume oil. Body oil can be formulated using heavy and light oils so the consistency is thicker than perfume oils. Perfume oil is convenient and portable; you can carry a bottle around with you easily no matter where you go—to work, on a date, or when travelling! The perfumes are also lighter than body oils so they’re perfect during warm weather.
Perfume oil is more concentrated.
Perfume oils are more concentrated than body oils. This means they contain a higher percentage of essential oils and fragrance ingredients, allowing the scent to last longer on the skin. However, this concentration can also make a big difference for customers with sensitive skin or fragrance sensitivities. If the fragrance oils used are synthetic or not skin-safe, they may cause irritation—especially when applied directly to the skin in high concentrations.
For this reason, body oils are often a better choice for sensitive skin or those with scent sensitivities. They tend to be more moisturizing and less overpowering, especially when scented with essential oils or gentle plant-based extracts.
Perfume oil lasts longer.
Because of their concentration, perfume oils tend to linger on the skin longer than traditional sprays or body oils. Sprays often evaporate quickly, while perfume oils are absorbed slowly and release their scent over time. That said, it can take a few minutes for your nose to adjust before you experience the full fragrance.
Perfume oil is convenient and portable.
Perfume oil is convenient and portable. You can carry it with you wherever you go, and it’s easy to use. Most perfume oils are bottled in small rollerball containers, making them ideal for travel or on-the-go use. In contrast, body oils—often packaged in larger bottles—can be less travel-friendly but offer more benefits for skin hydration.
