The Basics of Essential Oils

The Basics of Essential Oils

Essential oils are the concentrated, natural oils that are extracted from plants. They’re highly concentrated and should be used sparingly, as they can cause irritation if applied too frequently or in too high concentrations. Essential oils have been used for thousands of years for medicinal purposes and also have therapeutic benefits when applied topically.

Essential oils can also be used to create fragrances for cleaning products such as air fresheners, laundry detergents or car air-fresheners (although fragrance oil could also be used in these applications).

Essential oils are a great way to add fragrance to your home and personal care products. We'll explore what essential oils are, how they can be used, and which ones might be best for different situations.

Popular Essential Oils
lavender essential oil - sweet floral scent

Lavender essential oil is a great relaxant and stress reliever, making it an ideal choice for nighttime use. Apply 3-5 drops on your pillow before bed to help you sleep better or apply directly to your skin as a perfume.

Lavender is also beneficial for the skin and hair. For acne-prone skin, combine 1 tablespoon carrier oil with 10 drops lavender essential oil and massage gently into affected areas once or twice daily until cleared (this can take up to 10 days). To reduce dryness in the winter months, add 2 drops each of lavender and rosemary essential oils to 2 tablespoons of chamomile tea that has been allowed to cool completely before applying with cotton balls or towels after showering or bathing. You can also add 2 drops each of lavender and clary sage essential oils per cup of carrier oil when massaging into legs after shaving as an alternative moisturizer.

tea tree essential oil - antiseptic

Tea tree essential oil is a natural antiseptic and is used to treat cuts, burns, insect bites and stings. Tea tree oil is one of the most versatile essential oils available. It can be used in soaps and lotions as well as a household cleaner or disinfectant.

Tea tree oil has been shown to have antibacterial properties against many different types of bacteria including Staphylococcus (Staph), Streptococcus (strep), Clostridium difficile (C-diff), Salmonella typhi and Pseudomonas aeruginosa which can be found in some infections like acne breakouts.

rosemary essential oil - woody, invigorating

Don't let the name fool you: rosemary essential oil is extracted from the leaves of the rosemary plant, and it has a woody, pine-like scent that can be invigorating. Rosemary essential oil is used in many beauty products such as shampoos and conditioners, but it's also found in aromatherapy where it's said to calm anxiety by stimulating your brain's olfactory bulb.

ylang ylang essential oil - floral fragrance

Ylang ylang essential oil is a great addition to any home. It can be used in perfume, soaps and candles. It has a floral aroma that’s relaxing and soothing to the senses, making it a perfect choice for use during meditation or whenever you need some peace of mind.

Ylang ylang essential oil is also known to help with anxiety and stress as well as depression. If you suffer from headaches or muscle aches, this is an excellent oil for those conditions as well — just dilute the oil in some carrier oil before applying it to your skin! Ylang ylang makes an excellent base note in perfumes or homemade lotions because of its sweet scent; it's also said to help reduce acne and eczema outbreaks due to its antibacterial properties. Another benefit? The sweet aroma may even improve your mood while reducing anxiety!

lemon essential oil - cleansing and cheerful

Lemon essential oil is a great mood lifter, and it's also great for cleaning and purifying. You can use lemon essential oil to wipe down your bathroom, kitchen countertops, or even your floors—the scent will brighten up the space and make you feel happier just by being there. You can also add it to a diffuser or vaporizer for an uplifting aroma that will lift your spirits! Lemon essential oil is also good for rubbing on sore muscles (like after a workout), adding to cleansing products like soaps or lotions, and making homemade cleaners.
